What Can Corpus Christi Learn From UTSA's Technology Outage?
A San Antonio incident offers a useful resiliency lesson for Coastal Bend organizations before the next disruption happens
San Antonio's outage should get Corpus Christi's attention
San Antonio may be a couple of hours up I-37, but when a major institution there experiences a serious technology disruption, Corpus Christi businesses and institutions should pay attention.
In August, UT San Antonio delayed the start of fall classes after detecting attempted unauthorized activity against its technology systems. UTSA said the activity was detected at the edge of its network before reaching core systems and that services were proactively taken offline. The university later restored services in phases and required institution-wide passphrase resets.
UTSA has not publicly released a final root cause, so this is not an attempt to diagnose what happened. The more useful question for Corpus Christi is what local organizations can learn from the response.
A sophisticated IT environment can still be disrupted
One of the most important findings from my research was that UTSA is not operating a simple technology environment. Its public documentation describes internal server hosting and management, networking, monitoring, backups and recovery, a research data center, Cisco-based voice services, and technical positions responsible for enterprise networking, security, servers, storage and virtualization.
That matters because it changes the lesson. This was not simply a small organization without technology resources. Even organizations with experienced people, infrastructure, redundancy and outside partners still need plans for containment, recovery and continuity.
The Coastal Bend should ask the questions before the emergency
For institutions such as Del Mar College and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, the UTSA incident can be used as a reason to review resiliency without assuming their environments have the same risks or architecture.
What happens if a major incident begins at 8 p.m. on a Friday? Who can respond internally? How quickly can critical vendors provide senior technical resources? Are phones, identity systems, internet access, classroom technology and public communications dependent on the same infrastructure? When was disaster recovery last tested? Is there redundancy in people as well as hardware?
The same questions apply beyond higher education. Healthcare organizations, manufacturers, energy companies, government agencies, financial institutions and growing businesses across the Coastal Bend increasingly depend on technology to operate.
For technology sellers, lead with research instead of fear
There is also a sales lesson here. An MSP or cybersecurity company should not approach a Corpus Christi institution by saying, "Look what happened to UTSA. You need our cybersecurity services."
The outage itself does not tell a salesperson what to sell.
A stronger conversation might begin with the lessons raised by the incident: after-hours staffing, vendor escalation, monitoring, disaster recovery, communications and the ability to add specialized resources quickly. The objective should be to understand how the organization operates today and where an outside partner could strengthen the existing team.
The opportunity might be cybersecurity. It could also be 24/7 engineering coverage, network support, monitoring, backup and recovery, telecom continuity, hardware support, staff augmentation or co-managed IT. It is also possible that the organization already has the right resources and partners in place.
Good consulting allows for that answer.
Learn from the incident before Corpus Christi has its own
Corpus Christi does not need to wait for a major local outage to begin these conversations. One advantage of watching what happens in larger markets such as San Antonio is the opportunity to learn from their experiences.
Technology resiliency is not only about preventing every incident. That is unrealistic. It is also about how quickly an organization can detect a problem, contain it, communicate through it and recover.
The best time to find the gaps is before everyone is trying to solve them at the same time.
